Nearly 4 years ago I traveled to Ireland with my coauthor (David Boutland) to deliver a talk at University College Dublin on the concept of supererogation. The conference/workshop was FANTASTIC and I made some friends that I still keep in touch with today. One of those friends was Dr. Alfred Archer and I am excited that he has accepted my invitation to blog periodically at APT from time to time about his research.
Alf and I debated into the wee hours of the morning and he is nothing short of impressive. He is a thoughtful and charitable philosopher who is versed in many areas of philosophy. In an age where everyone seems to be narrowly specializing Alf is doing the opposite. He has written on issues in applied ethics, ethics, aesthetics, and moral psychology, among others (for his impressive list of publications see here). Since our meeting in 2014 he has produced countless publications in top tier journals and books and even guest blogs on various sites from time to time. So it was a no-brainer for me to invite him to contribute to my last co-edited collection (The Moral Psychology of Compassion) and his paper, “The Moral Value of Compassion” was one of my favorites in the volume. A pre-print of that paper can be found here. His first post will also be on his contribution to this volume.
Anyway, join me in welcoming Alf to the fold.
You can find him on academia.edu here. And on twitter @alfredarcher2
