Eric Schwitzgebel, who runs a very nice blog (The Splintered Mind), has compiled and posted a list of about 360 sci-fi movies, novels, and short stories recommendations by 34 philosophers. This excellent compilation can be found here. In his own words:
“I have compiled two mega-lists, organized differently. One mega-list is organized by contributor, so that you can see all of Scott Bakker’s recommendations, then all of Sara Bernstein’s recommendations, etc. It might be useful to skim through to see whose tastes you seem to share and then look at what other works that person recommends.
The other mega-list is organized by author (or director or TV series), to highlight authors (directors / TV shows) who were most often recommended by the list contributors.”

Serious science fiction is a vehicle for exploring ideas both philosophical, scientific and political, and as such it has always saddened me that society dismisses it so easily and completely. There are many works of science fiction that, in my opinion, should rank amongst the finest modern literature. Over the years I have tried to persuade the more educated and open-minded of my friends to read novels I rate highly but, by the gods, it’s an uphill struggle. It’s true the market is saturated with thrilling-but-barren stories of the bug-eyed monster, Flash Gordon, Star Wars ilk. Low-quality work predominates in other genres too, yet its presence doesn’t prevent people from labelling their best works as ‘literature’. Why is science fiction different?
